What is vernacular? –

Introduction 👋

Vernacular describes the type of words that ordinary people use in an area/country.

For example, the words “mom” or “soccer” are both common parts of the vernacular in the USA.

Vernacular is the language that is native to a specific region or country.

There are many vernaculars in the world, but there are some vernaculars that are more widely spoken than others.

One of these vernaculars is English. It has been spreading around the world and has become an international language.

In 2019 it was estimated that 1.5 billion people speak English worldwide!

English is not only spoken in England, but also in countries like America, Canada and Australia. There are even people who speak it as their first language, despite not living in England.

Vernacular clothing and vernacular architecture 🥻🏛️

You might hear the terms “vernacular clothing” or “vernacular architecture” being used.

They are very similar to vernacular language because they relate to the area that something has come from. –

Vernacular clothing = types of clothing that are local to an area/its history

For example, wearing kilts (a knee-length, skirtlike item) are part of Scotland’s vernacular clothing.

Vernacular architecture = types of buildings that are local to an area’s/its history

For example, English vernacular buildings have either thick, heavy walls made from stone/brick/mud, or timber frames, filled in with a lighter material like plaster.
