🪜How progression works
Progress in the Real Life Curriculum is not based on age alone. Instead, students progress through four levels of competence in each pillar, at different speeds, depending on confidence, interest, and ability.
- Foundation Level 🥉 Understanding the basics and avoiding common mistakes.
- Applied Level 🥈 Using skills in real situations with growing confidence.
- Advanced Level 🥇 Handling complexity, trade-offs, and responsibility.
- Higher Level 🏆 Optional depth, leadership, or near-professional competence.
All students are expected to reach foundation in every pillar. Progress beyond that is flexible and personalised.

🗓️How The Real Life Curriculum fits into a school timetable
The Real Life Curriculum is designed to fit neatly into a normal secondary school timetable, without increasing teaching hours or overwhelming students.
It replaces fragmentation with structure, while keeping enough flexibility for schools to adapt it to their context.
Weekly structure ⌚
Each of the 11 pillars is taught for:
- 2 lessons per week
- Across the full school year
This ensures that every area of adult life is treated as core learning.
Over a standard school week, this creates a balanced curriculum where practical life skills sit alongside academic learning in a consistent, predictable way.
The Real Life Curriculum accounts for 22 out of 25 teaching hours, meaning within the school week there are 3 hours every week of flexible lesson time for schools to schedule according to their context.
Yearly structure 📆
Each pillar contains:
- 6 modules per year
- Which means 2 modules expected to be completed per term (approx 12 weeks)
- Each module runs for approximately 6 weeks
This pacing mirrors the natural rhythm of a school term and allows time for:
- Teaching
- Practice
- Reflection
- Light-touch assessment
- 117 flexible lessons per year, to manage schedule changes or disruption (school trips, enrichment days, guest speakers, catch up sessions, intervention and support, assessment windows, assemblies, career days, snow days, local priorities e.g. faith, community, specialist programmes)
Module structure 📋
Each module consists of:
- 12 lessons total
- 2 lessons per week
- Over 6 weeks
This gives enough time to:
- Introduce concepts properly
- Apply them in real-life scenarios
- Build confidence through repetition
Modules are designed to be self-contained, so learning feels complete.
Why this works in practice ⚙️
This structure means:
- Teachers, parents, and students always know what is being taught and for how long.
- Students experience clear beginnings and endings to learning topics.
- Schools can plan staffing, rooms and resources with confidence and flexibility.
- Missed lessons (trips, illness, events) don’t derail entire subjects.
Progression 🪜
Across the four years of the curriculum:
- Students revisit the same pillars every year
- But each year increases in depth, complexity, and independence
- Skills are reinforced rather than forgotten
This avoids the “learn it once and drop it” difficulties that are common in traditional curricula.
🗺️Where did the other subjects go?
We know it looks different from a traditional school timetable. Don’t worry – everything from typical national curriculums hasn’t disappeared.
We’ve taken the most important parts from typical national curriculums, and woven subjects into The Real Life Curriculum.
